Alt/Shift: Examining the Future Form of Education

Alt-Shift Logo_4blog

Alt/Shift is a one day conference driven by university lecturers and design directors in creative industries who are challenged to examine the future of design education. Camberwell Press director Darryl Clifton is one of the speakers for the event. Discussions at Alt-Shift derive from topics that have come to the attention of design graduates, practioners and tutors; such as instigating the business like methods that have potential to coexist within a creative degree. As well as discussing the importance of communicating and building relationships in design industries with the emphasis on collaboration.

Visit Alt/Shift website to find more on the subjects for discussion and book your place. The conference takes place on Thursday 13 December at the LBi Event Space in London.

  • Matt Wade – Co-founder and Director of Kin.
  • Russell Holmes – Creative Strategy Partner at Ico Design.
  • Will Hudson – Founder of It’s Nice That.

  • Derek Yates – Project Coordinator, Senior Lecturer in Graphic Design. Camberwell College of Arts.

Alt/Shift is thinking about the following:

How can we connect with and inform emerging creative methodology? Do we need to be more accountable to the industries we serve? Do we have a wider social responsibility? How do we build better relationships with the tertiary and secondary sectors?

What are the priorities that will drive our pedagogy into the 21st Century?

Maverick or collaborator? Isolation or connection? Picture maker or problem solver? Authorship or co-creation? Minority or majority? Originality or interpretation? Artifact or experience? Craft or communication? Freedom or restriction? Inspiration or evidence? Clarity or intrigue? Academic or vocational? Niche or mainstream? Personal or Public?

Good post Kurt. As a small iOS development shop, we struggle with this exact issue. We haven't found any magic, but we have tried to coach our entire team of designers, developers and project management personnel in an effort to raise their awareness regarding the relevance, importance and 'value' of this role.
