Created by Brighten the Corners, 'I used to be a design student' is a new publication that looks at the fundamental change from studying design at university to establishing a career in the arts. The launch of the book opens at Camberwell College of Arts next Monday 18th February as the books content was inspired by a workshop Brighten the Corners led with Camberwell graphic design students.
Frank Philippin and Billy Kiosoglou met whilst studying graphic design and have worked together on Brighten the Corners since graduating from the Royal College of Art in London in 1999. Following the launch of the book Frank and Billy are to lead two workshops for the current Camberwell BA Graphic Design course at Camberwell College of Arts to complete the full circle, returning to the source of inspiration for the project.

At the first workshop at Camberwell Frank and Billy originally presented their old student projects alongside work they had done in the ‘professional world’ and looked for connections between them. 'Initially, we weren't sure how fruitful this comparison would be, but we quickly realised that the connections were there once we started looking. These were sometimes conceptual, other times visual, but there was also a certain attitude that permeated the work.'
Students at Camberwell responded well to the concept of relating their college work to future professional projects and this helped bridge the student and professional worlds a little, 'demystifying the transition from one to the other, reassuring students that they needn't tremble with awe at the professional world, but instead remember that most practising designers used to be design students too.'
50 designers are featured in the book, including a large number of Camberwell alumni: Tim Balaam (Hyperkit, London), Lucinda Newton-Dunn (formerly Noble, Space-to-think, LA), Richard Walker (KK Outlet, London) and Julie Gayard (Jutojo, Berlin)

I used to be a design student opens at 6pm at Camberwell College of Arts, on Monday 18th February. You can order the book online here.Related Post
